Looking after yourself

I was running a Coaching supervision session this week with a group of Coaches talking about huge change in their organisation, and the need to look after themselves. Fear of job losses was rife, and people felt stretched, overworked with little time to reflect, and felt guilty about coming to the session, as it was an “indulgence and a luxury”.

We talked through some of the issues around this, and one of the Coaches had been to a seminar run by David Ullrich, who had come up with a model about areas of our lives, that are important for us to reflect on and nurture.

The 5 areas

•    Our physical well being
•    Our emotional well being, self identity and resilience
•    Our social well being, in and out of work
•    Our intellectual well being, ongoing learning and stretch
•    Our spiritual well being, values and moral code

It got me to thinking that working with clients, and for ourselves, its important periodically to take stock of where we are in each of these areas, and if somehow they are “dried up” or under resourced, then we need to feed them, and make sure that we have each of these elements in balance.

I have put together a simple diagnostic tool to help review each of these areas, and score them, helping to identify areas that need redressing and renewal that you can talk over with a friend or a Coach.
